Will OpenAI outmatch Google?

A new era of humanoid robots 🤖

Welcome back! This week, Elon Musk takes on the AI fashion runway. On Sunday, the SpaceX founder posted a fake virtual fashion show featuring Pope Francis in a white Balenciaga-like buffer coat and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a rainbow-colored strapless Louis Vuitton-inspired gown.

Kamala Harris also made an appearance in a coconut-like bikini top and a “Harris 2024”-imprinted skirt, and Donald Trump donned an orange pinstripe prison-like jumpsuit…

I have plenty of thoughts about this bizarre showcase of Generative AI. What do you think? Hit reply and let me know!

OpenAI Announces SearchGPT: A New AI-Powered Search Engine

This just in: OpenAI has launched SearchGPT, a pilot AI-powered search engine available starting with 10,000 users. This new tool is designed to provide real-time access to information across the internet, organizing and making sense of data rather than just listing links.

How it works: Users start by entering a query. SearchGPT then provides a summary of relevant information and includes links to the original sources. Users can further refine their search by asking follow-up questions, which are displayed in a sidebar with additional related links.

Competitive landscape: This move marks OpenAI’s bold entry into the competitive search engine market. It directly challenges Google and Perplexity, signaling a shift in how AI can redefine search. This move intensifies competition as companies race to integrate advanced AI features and secure user engagement.

Comparing search engines side-by-side:

  • Perplexity: An AI "answer" engine that provides real-time information with detailed answers and higher usage limits. It’s user-friendly and ideal for intensive research tasks.

  • SearchGPT: A prototype aiming to integrate AI search capabilities directly into ChatGPT. It focuses on quick, accurate responses, interactive charts, and rich content using retrieval augmented generation (RAG) to lower hallucinations.

  • Google: The established leader, integrating features like AI Overviews that provide AI-generated summaries. Google's search engine is comprehensive but has faced reliability issues with AI-generated content.

Why it matters: This launch marks a significant challenge to Google and other search engines, which have been scrambling to integrate AI features to stay competitive.

Previously, Perplexity faced some heat by creators over questions of content ownership. By working closely with news partners like The Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press, OpenAI aims to create a more ethical and accurate AI search tool, addressing concerns over content attribution and originality.

Meta releases the biggest open-source AI model yet

On Tuesday, Meta released Llama 3.1, the largest-ever open-source AI model, which outperforms OpenAI and other rivals on certain benchmarks. Mark Zuckerberg is confident that Meta’s AI assistant will surpass ChatGPT’s usage in the coming months. Let’s dig deeper →

Key details:

  • Unprecedented scale: Llama 3.1 is significantly more complex than previous versions, boasting 405 billion parameters and trained with over 16,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This massive model brings unparalleled processing power to the table.

  • Advanced features: This model generates images based on specific likenesses and integrates with search engine APIs to perform intricate tasks. It's designed to handle a wide range of applications, from creative arts to complex data analysis.

Collaboration highlights:

  • Meta is working with over two dozen companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Nvidia, and Databricks, to deploy Llama 3.1. These partnerships enhance the model’s utility across various applications and industries.

  • This collaborative effort ensures Llama 3.1 will be continually improved and tailored to meet diverse needs.

Why it matters: The trend of making AI models open-source rather than proprietary is gaining momentum. Open-source models like Llama 3.1 democratize access to advanced AI, enabling more developers to innovate without high costs. This mirrors the success of open-source projects like Linux, which transformed the tech landscape by fostering collaboration and innovation.

What’s next: With Llama 3.1, Meta aims to not only compete with but surpass ChatGPT in usage, potentially becoming the most widely used AI assistant by the end of the year. As more developers and companies adopt Llama 3.1, we can expect a surge in innovative applications and solutions powered by this robust model.

Former Tesla humanoid head launches a robotics startup

Mytra

Chris Walti, the former head of Tesla’s humanoid project, launched Mytra this week, a startup focused on warehouse robotics. Mytra aims to address labor shortages and improve efficiency in fulfillment operations.

The highlights:

  • Walti’s journey: After seven years at Tesla, leading projects like Optimus, Walti brings his expertise in autonomous mobile robots to Mytra, with avision to revolutionize warehouse operations.

  • Innovative solutions: Mytra’s robots are designed to handle heavy payloads and offer dynamic movement, setting them apart from existing solutions. These robots can navigate complex environments and perform tasks with high precision.

  • Current projects: The startup has pilot projects with Albertsons and several other Fortune 50 companies, and it recently raised $50 million in a Series B funding round.

Why it matters: The pandemic highlighted the need for more efficient warehouse automation. With only 5-10% of global warehouses meaningfully automated, there is significant growth potential.

  • Mytra’s advanced robotic solutions could help retailers catch up with the increasing demand for fast and reliable fulfillment.

What’s next: As Mytra scales and continues to innovate, it could play a key role in making warehouse automation more efficient and responsive to future challenges. Watch this space as Mytra's technology potentially reshapes the logistics and supply chain landscape.
