Your Breakdown of AI News For This Week

New Mind-Expanding Tools, News & Videos For The Week

It’s been another busy week in the world of AI. The largest open source LLM was released to the public this week. Anthropic released Claude Pro. And Twitter updated their terms of service to allow them to use your tweets and data for the purpose of training its AI.

On a personal note, I’ve been working on some cool things with the Future Tools brand. The Future Tools Website has been going through several overhauls to make it even more valuable for you, helping surface amazing deals available among the sea of AI tools. This newsletter is getting some updates as I’ll be increasing the frequency to twice a week but shortening each issue, with the aim of making it easier for you to keep up with, and digest, all the latest happenings in the world of AI. And I just brought on board a new team member who is going to help me improve the quality of the videos that I put on YouTube.

But I know you don’t subscribe to this newsletter to hear about what I'm up to... So, let’s dive into what’s happened this week.

🗞️ AI News & Articles

  1. Spread Your Wings: Falcon 180B is here - Anthropic has released Falcon 180B, a massive new AI model with 180 billion parameters, trained on 3.5 trillion tokens of internet data. It achieves state-of-the-art results on language tasks, topping the leaderboard for available AI models and rivaling proprietary models. Falcon 180B represents a breakthrough in open AI research, providing an extremely capable language model that anyone can use. While difficult to definitively rank, it is considered on par with models like Google's PaLM 2 Large. This high-performing model enables new applications in natural language processing. However, it still has limitations like generating incorrect information, so responsible use is important. Overall, Falcon 180B advances the frontier of AI capabilities that are openly available.

  2. How the AI Revolution Will Reshape the World  - Advances in AI and related technologies like synthetic biology are unleashing a new wave of capability that will redistribute power on an unprecedented scale. As AI becomes cheaper and more powerful, it will soon allow anyone from large corporations to lone individuals to accomplish much more in all domains. This proliferation of enhanced capabilities to all people and groups will profoundly reshape society in unpredictable ways. For example, AI could allow small groups to wield influence comparable to governments or enable authoritarian regimes to exert unprecedented control. While technological change always brings disruption, the accessibility and pace of AI's advances makes this transition uniquely risky and disruptive. We must thoughtfully manage these tools to contain their risks and harness their benefits. Overall, the seismic shifts in who can accomplish what goals mean AI will empower humanity but also displace existing power structures. This could dramatically impact the world by disrupting industries, challenging governance, and enabling new global actors. We must prepare for this age of mass empowerment.

  3. Inside Elon Musk's Struggle for the Future of AI - Elon Musk is deeply concerned about the dangers of uncontrolled artificial intelligence, which he sees as a potential existential threat to humanity. He has been urgently working on multiple projects to try to assure AI develops safely, including founding OpenAI and Neuralink. Musk worries AI systems at companies like Google could become too powerful or go rogue, so he aims to create more carefully aligned AIs. He now plans to launch a new company called xAI to pursue the goal of an AI focused on truth-seeking rather than just task completion. Musk hopes to use data from Tesla and Twitter to train AIs capable of reasoning and operating in the physical world. Overall, Musk is racing to steer the development of AI in a direction that preserves human consciousness, which he sees as precious and unique. Though his views are controversial, Musk's influence means his efforts could shape the future development of a technology with profound impacts.

📢 Announcements

  • Future Tools Website Updates: I’ve been making a lot of updates recently to the Future Tools website. I added a “Special Offer” toggle where you can sort out the tools where the creator made an exclusive discount just for Future Tools users. I’ve also added a “recently added” menu item so that you can see the tools added in the past 24 hours. I created an FAQ page to answer the most common questions I receive… And, in the next few days, I’ll be rolling out the “dark mode” feature for the website. Check it out if you haven’t been to the site recently!

  • Awesome Contests In The Discord: If you’re not in the Discord community yet, now is a great time to join! We’ve got a contest going right now for a “Matt Wolfe” logo. There’s a week left on the contest and the winner will receive $500! (Plus there will be runner-up prizes as well.) Jump into the community for free here.

  • Some Newsletter Changes: I mentioned last week that there will be some tweaks to the newsletter. Starting next week, you’ll start to notice the changes. One thing we’re planning on testing is moving to two emails per week. One email will be focused on the coolest tools, while the other will be focused on the news from the week. This will make each email a little shorter and a little more focused, ideally making it easier for you to consume and quickly stay in the loop. We’re open to feedback though!

Interested in working together on a newsletter sponsorship, YouTube integration, or featured listing on the Future Tools website? Get in touch here. I’m pretty picky and look out for the audience above all else but feel free to reach out here and let’s see if we can make something happen.

Thanks for checking out this week's Future Tools newsletter!

If you haven’t already, be sure to follow me over on X, I like to share news and AI updates as they happen. :)

And don't forget to check out all of the newest tools we've just added on Future Tools!

Finally, if you have any feedback for me or ideas for this newsletter, get in touch! Replying to these emails will get to me and I will read all replies (but may not be able to reply to all). I want to improve this and continue to make it something that you're super excited about each week. So all ideas are welcome!

You rock! See ya next week. :)
