Plus: Nvidia's riskiest investment yet

Welcome back! AI might not necessarily be keeping the economy afloat like some tech leaders think it is, but it does have a big impact. New analysis from MRB Partners found AI-related investments contributed 20–25% of real GDP growth in 2025.

Is that more or less than you would’ve predicted? Hit reply and let me know what you think!

Microsoft Launches Maia 200 Chip to Break Nvidia's Stranglehold

Via Startups

Microsoft just unveiled the Maia 200, a custom chip designed to power AI models at scale—and cut its dependence on Nvidia in the process. The chip, which follows the Maia 100 released in 2023, packs in more than 100 billion transistors and delivers over 10 petaflops in 4-bit precision and approximately 5 petaflops of 8-bit performance, a substantial jump over its predecessor.

How it stacks up:

  • Microsoft claims the Maia 200 delivers 3x the FP4 performance of Amazon's third-generation Trainium chips and outperforms Google's seventh-generation TPU in FP8 performance.

  • The chip is already running workloads for Microsoft's Superintelligence team and powering Copilot, the company's chatbot. Microsoft has now opened the Maia 200 software development kit to developers, academics, and frontier AI labs.

The Nvidia problem: Inference (the process of running AI models) has become a massive operating cost for AI companies as their models mature. Nvidia's GPUs remain the gold standard, but their cost and scarcity have pushed tech giants to design their own chips. Google has its TPU, Amazon has Trainium, and now Microsoft is positioning Maia as a competitive alternative.

The bigger picture: As AI models grow larger and more computationally demanding, the infrastructure to run them is becoming a bottleneck. Companies that can lower costs and reduce reliance on third-party chips will have a structural advantage.

OpenAI Wants $60 Per 1,000 Ad Views on ChatGPT

OpenAI is preparing to roll out its first ads on ChatGPT in the coming weeks for users on the free and lower-tier Go plans. For advertisers, the price tag will be hefty—reportedly around $60 per 1,000 views, triple what Meta currently charges.

  • What it means for you: OpenAI says it won’t sell your data to advertisers and promises to keep ChatGPT conversations private. Also, ads won’t appear for users under 18 and chats about sensitive topics like mental health or politics.

  • What advertisers get: Advertisers gain access to an engaged audience in a conversational AI environment where traditional ad formats don't exist yet. But despite the premium pricing, OpenAI won't offer granular tracking like Meta provides. Early advertisers will only receive "high-level" data like total ad views and clicks, with no insight into whether users made a purchase after seeing an ad.

A departure from competitors…This marks a sharp contrast with Google, which said it wouldn't run ads in Gemini in order to preserve the user experience. OpenAI is betting that ChatGPT's massive reach (hundreds of millions of monthly users) justifies the premium.

…and from its original mission. OpenAI is no longer a nonprofit. From launching a for-profit arm to charging premium subscription tiers and now inserting ads into ChatGPT, the company is aggressively monetizing at every level.

Why it matters: The question is whether advertisers will pay triple Meta's rates for incomplete data and whether users will tolerate ads in a tool they once saw as ad-free.

Nvidia Invests $2B in Debt-Ridden CoreWeave to Add 5GW of AI Compute

Nvidia just poured $2 billion into CoreWeave to help the data center company add more than 5 gigawatts of AI computing capacity by 2030. The investment is a strong vote of confidence in a company that's been under scrutiny for carrying almost $19 billion in debt obligations as of September 2025.

What they're building together: Nvidia and CoreWeave will jointly build AI factories—massive data centers using Nvidia's products, including the new Rubin chip architecture, Bluefield storage systems, and the Vera CPU line. Nvidia will also help CoreWeave acquire land and power for data centers, and the partnership will integrate CoreWeave's infrastructure into Nvidia's reference architecture to sell to cloud businesses and enterprises.

Why it matters: The appetite for AI compute infrastructure remains insatiable. CoreWeave has successfully ridden the AI wave since transitioning from crypto mining to AI data center services, counting OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft as customers.
