Meta’s Data Grab Gets Green Light in the EU

Via Reuters
Meta got the go-ahead on Monday to train its AI on your Facebook and Instagram posts—if you’re in Europe.
Here’s the twist: For years, Meta used US data to train its models, but GDPR blocked it from doing the same in the EU. After months of regulatory back-and-forth, Meta now says it “meets legal obligations” and will start using public posts and interactions this week to train its models, unless users opt out.
What it means: This cracks open a huge new dataset for Meta, which could help its models better understand European languages, humor, and cultural nuance. Plus, it brings Meta one step closer to keeping pace with Google and OpenAI in the global model race.
Nvidia Brings Chipmaking to US Soil
Nvidia is finally putting its money where the White House wants it. The chip company will build its AI supercomputers entirely in the US, with over 1 million square feet dedicated to chip and computer manufacturing in Arizona and Texas.
PR stunt or survival strategy? The move reportedly helped Nvidia avoid new export controls on its H20 chip after a promise to invest domestically. CEO Jensen Huang says the company could produce up to $500 billion in US AI infrastructure over the next four years.
Scaling won’t be easy. There’s a shortage of skilled labor, growing trade tensions with China, and uncertainty around funding for the Chips Act. Nvidia’s announcement might be a win for publicity, but execution is another story.
Why now: Other major players are making similar moves—OpenAI and Microsoft have both pledged billions to American data centers. The message is clear: build in the US or risk getting left behind.
CEOs Double Down on AI
AI has top executives rethinking hiring. Two tech CEOs told employees last week: Before requesting more headcount, show why AI can’t do the job.
Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke: “AI is now a fundamental expectation.” He’s even baking it into performance reviews.
Fiverr CEO Micha Kaufman: “AI is coming for every role,” no matter your title. His message? Re-skill now—or risk getting left behind by the industry, not just the company.
Zoom out: These aren’t isolated cases. Layoffs tied to AI automation hit a 20-month high last August. And despite rising demand for AI skills, only 12% of employees report receiving any training.
Why it matters: Fewer hires, more automation, and a clear mandate to upskill are the new normal. The era of default headcount growth is over.
