5 Cool AI Tools & The TLDR in AI This Week

New Mind-Expanding Tools, News & Videos For The Week

This week was a tiny bit slower than previous weeks in the AI world. I guess we can only have so many weeks in a row where we get GPT-4, plugins, Bard, NVIDIA conferences, Canva conferences, MidJourney V5, etc. March 2023 will likely go down in history as one of the most pivotal months in the history of AI. This will be seen as the month where everything exploded, and the AI Wars really heated up.

It will also be known as the month where those creating the AI finally said, "Whoa! We need to slow this whole thing down. We're moving a little too fast." Of course, no one actually expects things to slow down, but the likes of Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Emad Mostaque of Stability AI all spoke up to say that we absolutely should slow down.

We're entering an era where AI is starting to feel very similar to crypto, as it's becoming a hot-button topic. People and companies are calling for better government regulations, and countries are trying to ban tools like ChatGPT. When I got into AI about 18 months ago, I began playing with it because I wanted to make silly YouTube videos and generate images of cats eating tacos on the moon. I never thought I'd be breaking news about world leaders wanting to shut things down, giving play-by-plays of a battle between Google and Microsoft, or spending hours on Twitter Spaces debating the ethical and philosophical consequences of what's being built and the future of humanity… But here we are.

And to be honest, it still all fascinates me to no end, and I couldn't be more eager to nerd out about it all!

So what's up this week? Let's dig in!

🛠️ 5 Amazing Future Tools

1. Leonardo: This is, by no means, a new tool. It's just one that I've been holding off on talking about because they've been building a lot of cool things behind the scenes. It started off as a nice UI on top of Stable Diffusion. It has expanded into an AI image-generating powerhouse with its own proprietary versions of ControlNet, built-in training for your own images, its own unique AI image models, a completely unique canvas editing tool, and an innovative text-to-3D texture tool. It's basically becoming a web-based "Photoshop" for AI image generation.

2. Jeda.ai: This is an online collaborative AI whiteboard tool. You can use it to collaborate with team members on AI projects. It offers real-time collaboration, AI-generated content, AutoShape for hand-drawn style shapes, and real-time meeting minutes for improved organization.

3. Pico: This is a really simple app builder that leverages GPT-4. Simply write a quick description of the game or the app that you'd like, and it will generate a usable version in minutes. Examples include "Tic Tac Toe but with dogs and cats" or a "simple to-do list app." Think of an idea, type it in, and see what the app generates. It's totally free, and I managed to build a working Pong game in about 2 minutes with it.

4. Gamma: Gamma is like a combo of Notion and Canva, but for presentations. It's AI-powered, so you can quickly create visually appealing content without fussing over formatting. You can easily share it online or present live, and it supports various media formats like GIFs and videos. Plus, it's great for collaboration and works on any device. It saves you tons of time and makes your presentations way more engaging!

5. StudioGPT: StudioGPT is a tool for reimagining an existing image. Upload a logo and tell it to make it metallic. Upload a meme and reimagine it with different colors. If you're familiar with ControlNet for Stable Diffusion, StudioGPT is like a super easy interface for using ControlNet, without all the hassle of setting up Stable Diffusion. This tool does one thing and it does it well.

🗞️ 4 Fascinating Articles / News

  1. Elon Musk and others urge AI pause, citing 'risks to society' - This was the hottest topic of the week. Big names like Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Emad Mostaque, and many others all signed a letter urging those developing AI systems to pause on any new training that's more powerful than GPT-4. They worry that there is not enough insight available into the unintended consequences of this technology. Others speculate that this is just a big play to get OpenAI to slow down so other tech companies can catch up. However you look at it, I don't believe there's any real way to pause things at this point. Large, public companies may pause, but foreign entities and underground developers likely will not.

  2. AI risk ≠ AGI risk - Gary Marcus, the "Godfather of AI," put out a blog post around the same time the above letter was being signed by prominent tech figures. He urged people to rethink the advancement of AI, not for fears of Skynet or AI taking over the planet, but for "mediocre AI that is unreliable" and due to the risk of bad actors using it for nefarious purposes. He pointed out a recent scam where someone cloned the voice of someone else, called the parents of the voice they cloned, and scammed them out of money. Scammers and hackers are going to be able to leverage this technology to pull off more sophisticated scams and hacks.

  3. Italian privacy regulator bans ChatGPT - Saying that Italy totally banned ChatGPT is a bit of a "clickbait" title. They actually banned ChatGPT from collecting private data from Italian citizens, claiming that it does not comply with GDPR policies. There was a recent data breach from OpenAI that exposed some user data and even some payment information. They also criticized OpenAI for not verifying the age of users on their platform, which could expose minors to inappropriate content. They gave OpenAI 20 days to comply with their policies. Will we see more countries start to crack down on or even begin banning the use of AI products in their countries? I'd say it's inevitable. Good thing the world has VPNs.

  4. AI image generator Midjourney stops free trials - MidJourney is probably the most popular AI art generator of the moment. It's also gotten pretty darn realistic lately, with version 5. Up until this week, people were allowed to generate roughly 20 images for free with MidJourney. However, because so many people tried to work around the system by creating additional free Discord accounts and dance around the limitations of the free trial, MidJourney has opted to no longer allow free trial usage. They say it may or may not come back, but they need to figure out a way to stop people from gaming their system first.

💰️ A Money Idea To Try

Create Ad-Supported Games:

Yesterday, I spent roughly 50% of my day using ChatGPT with GPT-4 to create a video game. I managed to create a JavaScript-based side-scroller game where a little stick figure could jump from platform to platform, collect coins, rack up points, and face game over if they fell.

I have zero coding experience with JavaScript. I've never coded a game before in my life. I've seen YouTube videos of people claiming they built games entirely with GPT, but in almost all of those videos, the creators had at least some background knowledge in coding. I had no knowledge. I literally kept going back to ChatGPT and saying, "that didn't work, what should I try next" whenever I received an error. I was able to completely create a working game by repeating the process of copying and pasting my code into ChatGPT and asking, "what's wrong with the code and how do I fix it?"

Anyone can do this with mobile apps, JavaScript-based games, or anything else. Put a few Google AdSense ads around the game and direct people to it from Twitter and various social platforms, and you've got a fun little side income.
