Figma's AI is revolutionizing design 🎨

Plus: This AI generates NEW proteins

Welcome back! This week, it's all about AI personalities—with Character.AI and Meta duking it out to see who can make the most lifelike digital companions. Character.AI is now letting users call up their favorite AI characters for a chat, while Meta is testing user-created AI chatbots on Instagram.

Now that we can hit up AI characters with a phone call or slide into their DMs, it begs the question: Are we officially entering the era of AI companionship? 🤔

Figma Unveils AI Design Tools

Figma, the go-to platform for designers, is leveling up. At Figma's ConFig conference this week, the company announced the launch of Figma AI, now in beta. Let's dive into it.

Figma's history with AI: This isn't Figma's first foray into AI. Last year, it integrated AI into its whiteboarding tool FigJam to help designers visualize ideas and automate repetitive tasks. Now? The design giant is bringing AI directly into the design process with Figma AI, a full suite of AI features powered by third-party models.

Here’s the rundown:

  • Design Creation: Generate mobile and web UI mockups from a simple text prompt.

  • Name Layering: Automatically rename and organize layers with a single click to tidy up design files.

  • AI-Powered Prototyping: Convert static mockups into interactive prototypes.

  • Automate Tasks: Add realistic text, translate content, adjust tones, and generate images (illustrations, background removal, and more).

The coolest new feature? Visual Search. It’s like Google Lens, but for design: By uploading an image or selecting an area on the canvas, Figma AI can identify similar designs across all accessible team files, making collaboration smoother and more efficient.

  • Figma also upgraded its Asset Search feature, which uses AI to understand the context behind your search queries—like surfacing components labeled “btn_large” when you search “primary button.”

Why it matters: The introduction of Figma AI shows a broader trend of making design tools more accessible and intuitive. With competitors like Canva and Adobe ramping up their AI capabilities, Figma’s picking up the pace to remain a key player in the design space.

As design tasks become more automated, designers can adapt by leveraging these tools to improve their workflow, freeing up time to do what they do best: creating.

Dappier Launches Marketplace to Monetize Publisher Content

AI companies have been scraping online content to train their LLMs—often without permission or compensation. But now, an early-stage startup is stepping up to change the game.

Enter Dappier: The new platform where publishers can set a price for using their content in model training.

How it works: Publishers connect their content store via an RSS feed, which acts like a constantly updated list of their content. This content gets used to build models using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Here’s the breakdown:

  1. Content Sharing: The RSS feed provides a live list of all their latest content.

  2. Model Creation: AI models use RAG to pull content from the RSS feed to answer questions more accurately.

  3. Monetization: Publishers can make money by charging a small fee per query or showing ads alongside the answers.

The goal: Dappier’s marketplace provides an alternative to the current landscape, where content is often used without permission or proper compensation. This approach could offer a lifeline to media companies struggling with declining ad revenues.

  • So what’s in it for AI companies? Dappier offers legal access to high-quality, curated content, reducing legal risks and improving model accuracy. This structured content licensing approach could help AI companies stay compliant while building better-performing models.

Why it matters: With a $2 million seed round led by Silverton Partners, Dappier is poised to make a significant impact. Picture this: Reputable creators and publishers finally have a solid way to make money from their work, helping them keep the lights on. And on the flip side, AI models get access to reliable info they can actually trust.

EvolutionaryScale Raises $142M for Protein-Generating AI

Amazon- and Nvidia-backed startup EvolutionaryScale just raised $142M for protein-generating AI and released its frontier model, ESM3.

What's ESM3? EvolutionaryScale’s latest AI model aims to design and develop protein sequences for drug discovery and materials science. Trained on a dataset of 2.78 billion proteins and powered by Nvidia, ESM3 can simulate and predict protein structures, similar to Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold.

  • The key distinction: While AlphaFold excels at predicting 3D structures of existing proteins, EvolutionaryScale focuses on generating entirely new proteins.

How it works: ESM3 leverages AI to design new proteins by analyzing protein sequencing, structures, and functions. It takes this data, predicts how the proteins will fold and perform, and generates new, functional protein sequences. Scientists can then synthesize and test these proteins in the lab, providing feedback to further refine the AI model.

Who can use it?: The full 98-billion-parameter model is available for non-commercial use through EvolutionaryScale’s cloud Forge developer platform, while a smaller version is available for offline use. Pharmaceutical companies, researchers, and developers can integrate ESM3 into their workflows via AWS and Nvidia’s platforms.

Why it matters: EvolutionaryScale is betting big on scaling its model to incorporate data beyond proteins, aiming to create a general-purpose AI model for biotech applications. This could revolutionize the biotech industry, offering new tools for drug development and scientific research.
